Urban Silence Brief Overview:

Biomimicry: Biomimetics or biomimicry is the emulation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems.

The two approaches can co-exist in one space; biomorphism can add further meaning that would be achieved from a purely technical use of biomimicry. Biomorphism is a formal and aesthetic expression whereas biomimicry is a functional discipline.

It is also worth considering the limitations of biomimicry. Just as with any design discipline, it will not automatically produce architecture, and we should be wary of trying to become purely scientific about design. Biomimicry offers an empathetic, interconnected understanding of how life works and ultimately where we fit in. It is a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies used by species alive today. The aim is to create products, processes, and policies to influence a new way of living - solving our greatest design challenges circularity, sustainably and solidarity with all life on earth.

One plant that I have used to influence my design is through observing the tracked motion of a sunflower in response to sunlight. Its natural system of opening and closing and capturing the sun throughout the day.

The bamboo stalk is a traditional method of support when it comes to construction. I felt that bamboo could act as an alternative support structure referencing to biomimicry and highlighting the contrast of concrete and steel buildings surrounding my space.
